Now, I know that drawing your eyebrows on every day can be a real hassle, especially when they don’t look even or symmetrical. And let’s be honest, we’ve all been there before, jumping into a pool on holiday after spending 30 minutes perfecting our brows only to come out with smudged and uneven brows. The good news is, with a powder brow, you can have beautiful, symmetrical, smudge-free eyebrows every day, without the stress or frustration of constantly having to redraw them. It’s truly life-changing!
Many women miss having fuller eyebrows from their younger days or from the older trend of over-plucking and now have much thinner shapes. Your eyebrows frame your face, so it is essential to have the perfect brow that complements your face and bone structure. If you are struggling with sparse eyebrows and are considering microblading or powder brows to add fullness, this information will assist you in making the best decision for you.
Both treatments provide a more permanent solution to sparse brows, but there are key differences between the two.
Microblading has been declining in recent years as a solution for thin eyebrows with people favouring more natural looking techniques like Powder Brows. This semi-permanent method involves using a hand tool with a needle to create the appearance of individual eyebrow hairs, you still however need to draw your eye brows on top of Microblading.
I frequently encounter clients who mistakenly believe they are receiving powder brows after undergoing microblading. Additionally, a significant portion of my work involves providing cover-ups for previous microblading procedures.
The microblading process involves using a small handheld tool with several tiny needles to make tiny incisions that transfer semi-permanent pigmentation into the skin, creating a even distribution of the pigment. The procedure usually takes 30 to 45 minutes to complete and is performed with sterilized skin.
After the microblading process, you will receive aftercare cream and instructions on how to care for your new eyebrows during the healing process. The needle will cause your skin to become red, uncomfortable, and may start to scab over, but tenderness should subside within a few days.
The duration of the effects of microblading can vary and can last anywhere from three months to three years, depending on factors such as skin type (dry or oily), cosmetic products used, sun exposure, and lifestyle. Touch-ups are typically needed once a year, and those with oily skin may need touch-ups more frequently.
The healing process for microblading takes about a month to complete, and scabbing typically begins within 2 to 5 days. The skin’s natural exfoliation and regeneration processes can cause the microbladed brows to appear lighter and fade after the scabbing process is complete. However, the brows will return to normal after some time.
Powder brows, also known as ombre powder brows, are a cosmetic makeup procedure that gives the appearance of drawn on every day eye brows. The process for achieving powder brows is similar to microblading, but with a few key differences. This gentle technique is favoured by many due to its ability to adapt to every client and skin tone, as well as its minimal disruption and soft appearance. Powder brows are achieved through a “shading” technique that creates the illusion of fullness and definition.
Powder brows are also a semi-permanent solution for sparse eyebrows, but the procedure differs from microblading. With the powder brow technique, a hand-held machine with a small needle is used to create tiny pixels or dots, rather than straight lines. The pigment is deposited onto the skin, resulting in a more natural and soft look.
The ombre brows approach employs a “shading” technique to create the illusion of fullness and definition. If you want a more layered effect for your brows, you can add more shade, typically adding more to the arch and tail and less to the bulb and top corner if you want the brow to be left lighter or less shaded. The brows may appear dark and bold at first, but they lighten up and become softer and more natural in appearance over the first 6 weeks.
One reason people choose powder brows over microblading is for a more natural appearance. They give you the look of a much more natural, softly blushed-through brow, which is appealing to many people. Also, powder brows are more versatile, allowing you to achieve any look you desire, from a natural to a more defined and dramatic look.
Powder brows require a touch-up in around six weeks to maintain their fresh look, and the results can last anywhere from one to three years, depending on your skin type and care routine. The results of this technique have been shown to last longer than those of microblading while providing a softer, more filled-in appearance.
The healing process for powdered brows can differ for everyone, with immediate swelling and redness that should improve within a few hours or days. The end result will appear around fifty percent darker than the desired end result and will take four to ten days to lighten up. One month after the treatment, as the skin heals, the true colour of the pigment will begin to surface and the real colour will become apparent.
After the first visit, you’ll need to come back in six weeks for a touch-up, at which time your artist will evaluate your progress and determine what needs adding. Since the powdered brow technique is gentler and less invasive than microblading, older skin types tend to respond better to it.
In summary, microblading is becoming less popular due to its less natural look. If you are looking for a natural, softly defined look, powder brows are the way to go. However, if you are seeking a more dramatic, unnatural hair-stroke look, microblading may be the better choice. It is always important to have a consultation before having any of these procedures done to determine which method is right for you, as well as to ensure that you have a qualified and experienced artist who can deliver the results you desire.
