Taking good care of your new powdered brows after a permanent makeup appointment is critical for obtaining the best possible outcome, and it is essential to follow the instructions provided by your brow technician. Here is everything you need to know about caring for your powder brows, including day-by-day aftercare, things to avoid, touch-ups, and more.
It is essential to begin your aftercare routine from the moment your powdered brows procedure is finished. You will need to use cool, boiled (sterile) water on a cotton pad to wipe over your eyebrows from the inside out, applying a little pressure. Repeat this process on both eyebrows and discard the cotton pad. On the final wipe of the day, use a cotton bud to apply a small amount of the aftercare ointment provided to each brow, ensuring that you only apply a pea-sized amount that can cover both eyebrows. You must not use your finger to apply the ointment, as you must treat the area as you would an open wound. Always wash your hands before and after wiping and applying ointment. You should repeat this routine morning and night for 7-10 days and avoid getting them wet during this time.
The healing process of your skin can take up to six weeks, but you must follow the aftercare regimen for the first ten days after your procedure as this is when the pigment is setting into your skin. After the first ten days, you can relax your aftercare routine, but avoid doing anything your artist advised against, and always use factor 50 sunblock on your eyebrows in the sun. Your powder brows will have taken on their full form and colour after four to six weeks, and before this time, the pigment is still settling into your skin.
For the first day, you will wipe hourly with sterile water on a cotton pad, only applying aftercare ointment for the first time before bed. Then, use a cotton pad with sterile water to wipe your brows twice a day (morning and night) to keep them clean, taking care not to apply too much pressure.
This is when your eyebrows can begin to scab or flake, and you should continue with the same routine as days 1-3, wiping morning and evening and applying aftercare ointment. You may notice little bits of flakes as you wipe, and this is normal, but do not pick any areas. When the skin is ready to come off, it will do so with gentle wiping. Apply a little ointment during the day between wiping if that helps to soothe the area, but keep them as dry as possible at this time. Everyone’s healing journey is different, and it may fluctuate depending on your skin type and lifestyle, so don’t worry if your healing differs from the above.
During the time that your eyebrows are recovering, sun exposure should be avoided at all costs. Avoid getting water directly on your brow tattoo in any way, and avoid excessive sweating, saunas, pools, and steam rooms for the next ten days. Do not put Vaseline on your brows, only use the aftercare ointment provided for you by your brow technician. For ten days, you should not apply any type of cosmetics, lotions, or exfoliants that contain retinol acids and AHAs. Avoid receiving facials, massages, or any kind of skin treatment (light or laser therapy), as these might potentially change the colour of the pigment in your skin.
You should wait around 48 hours before washing your face, and even after that, you should be extremely careful not to get them wet. It is recommended that you avoid actively washing your face for the entirety of the healing procedure and instead only carefully wash around your eyebrows.
The ombre/powder brow treatment takes place over the course of two appointments, so the first touch-up is essential. Your finished result is not after the first appointment, and it is crucial to follow the aftercare routine for the first ten days to affect the healed result positively. After six weeks of the first procedure, the initial touch-up can be performed to add to any areas that may have faded more, add thickness and length, and correct any flaws in your eyebrows. It is normal to have to add to and tweak the colour and shape. After the six-week touch-up, it is recommended to have an annual colour boost to maintain your desired look. How rapidly the colour fades depends on your skin type and lifestyle. As soon as you observe that the colour is fading (usually up to 50%), contact your professional to schedule an appointment. It is normal for brows to appear ashy when they have faded, which is why the touch-up appointments are so important to add warmth back into your eyebrows. The time between touch-ups varies from person to person. Some people will be ready for a touch-up after 12 months, and some won’t be ready for two years.
It is crucial to follow all the advice provided by your brow technician to have a successful brow journey. Afterward, you can enjoy beautifully natural-looking brows every day. If you encounter any problems, don’t hesitate to get in touch with your brow technician as they will be available to assist you along the way. Keep in mind that everyone’s healing journey is different and that the healing process may fluctuate depending on your skin type and lifestyle.
